Oprah's Consumer-Decision Making

Oprah’s consumers are her viewers that have been very dear to her for the past twenty-five years. When Oprah Winfrey first national show was on aired on September 08, 1986, her topic was “How to Marry the Man or Woman of Your Choice”. She only had an audience of less than twenty-five viewers.  Oprah pursuance her own audiences to come see her shows, she recruited herself to the streets of Chicago giving away free tickets to her show. Little did anyone would have known she would become a household figure? The viewers have stated that “Oprah Winfrey career, was believed that Winfrey’s success was rooted in her ability to cater to middle-class white women—a significant segment of her viewing audience. Given the popularity of her show—it’s been the highest rated program of its type for two decades—there was an expectation that Winfrey would weigh in more forcefully on issues that directly affected African-Americans”. Her topics always provided viewers with positive, spiritual uplifting experience. She also had compelling interviews, and self-improvement segments. Over the past twenty-five years Oprah has thanked her viewers in some many ways. In 2004, every person on the set of the Oprah Winfrey show was given a new car (donated by General Motors). Every episode Oprah has always given away gifts. On the episodes of “her favorite thing” which was always the biggest give-away. The only year or season that Oprah did not give-away was in 2009, because of the economy.  Her total cost of “Oprah Favorite Things” was about $23.8 million dollars over a span of twenty-five years.  Oprah has always told her viewers “Even the wildest dreams have to start somewhere. Allow yourself the time and space to let your mind wander and your imagination fly.”
 

 

 

Oprah's Global Vision

Oprah’s Global Vision has always been to own her business in order to be her own boss.  With that in mind she has stride to be on top of the Global World targeting viewers from China to South Africa. When Oprah launched her first magazine named “O” The Oprah Magazine”. The monthly magazine publication, cater to women lifestyle circulates of 2.35 million readers each month. Oprah and Heart Magazines went global launching the first edition in South Africa, publishing monthly and which consisted of 110,000 and 110 pages of advertising. Her mission statement for her magazine stated “With this magazine we have an opportunity to make a real mark. To speak and connect to women in a way no other publication ever has. To help women see every experience and challenge as an opportunity to grow and discover their best self. To convince women that the real goal is becoming more of who they really are. To embrace their life.Oprah publishing her first overseas magazine in South Africa was natural because of the opportunities and growth of women achieving in South Africa. Not only did she go global with her magazine, she even ventured into a satellite radio naming it the “Oprah Radio”. Which is now aired on SIRIUS XM’s Radio, and heard by millions of subscribers. Oprah global vision has grown to involve the new generation of computer and Apple products. Her Satellite radio SIRUS XM’s has available app’s which can be downloaded to any Apple’s iPhone touch devices and subscribers that main-streamed on the Internet.

Oprah's Marketing Environment

Oprah has always been the cutting edge to Television.  She knew she wanted to be more than just an anchorwoman.  She ventured into broadcasting and enjoy being in the front of the camera. Having the opportunity to co-host her show in a market that was predominately for males. Her biggest competition at the time was “Phil Donahue”. Oprah develop ways to connect with her audience, she received better rating than Phil Donahue. Oprah selling herself, she renegotiated a new contract with King World Production and Channel 7 (ABC), which gave her rights to producing her show. Oprah understanding the marketing environment and what’s it is made up and the way it operators. Always keeping ahead of the game, every episode she treat it as her first.  She connects with her audience because of her woman-to-woman empathy and flair for self-revelation. Unlike any television figure that had come before her, Oprah examined social issues with intelligence and candor, engaging the heart. That is the number one reason why she has stayed in television for the past twenty-five years.  She knew how to market herself, her   shows has been viewed by millions of people in 117 countries worldwide.

 Oprah’s identifying that technology has changed. She went from television to owning her cable network. The Discovery Communications is replacing its Discovery Health Network with the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). Technically she's ending the show and starting a new on-the-road show called "Oprah's Next Chapter". Oprah has announced that she will be buddy up with Sirius XM Radio, a show that currently brings us some of Oprah Winfrey's greatest lessons via OWN, will begin airing on Oprah Radio.



OPRAH'S ETHICS & SOCIAL RESPONSIBLITY
Oprah’s have stated that “She have never planned one thing ever. She has been led by strong instinct, and have made choices based on what was right for her at the time”. Oprah’s approach towards business has taught her some hard lessons, as a result of her nontraditional approach to business. Harpo Productions, Inc. started out with only five employees and no management controls or development programs putting a strain on the production company. She operated the production company like a family. Oprah have stated “After a while, you can’t see everybody; you can’t talk to everybody. Oprah deciding that she needed more people to run Harpo Productions, Inc.  She hired a consultant to establish a clear business process and develop an organization alignment within the Harpo Productions, Inc. Oprah’s approach towards ethical behavior in her business is “It’s all about attracting good people”.  She has always surround herself with people who are smarter in ways she not. She encourages input from her colleagues and staff. Her ethical guidelines for the Harpo Productions, Inc. she have stated “I don’t yell at people, I don’t mistreat people.  I don’t talk down to people. She wishes no one in her vicinity, has the right to do it”. Her philosophy is that not only are you responsible for your life, but doing the best at that moment put you in the best place for the next moment. She feels that real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody’s going to know if you did it or not. This is why she has built a strong foundation and is accountable for her actions, having a sense of pride in effort to do the right thing, even if she is the only one to know it. Oprah’s social responsibility for her production company is her communication, leadership, and motivation skills.
When we look at workplace ethics, let understand the benefits of ethics in the workplace.  An organization that has established code of conduct and ethics always functions better, and has a great image among the employee.  When the code of ethics has guides there are employees who make challenging decisions.  This is quality also maintains complete professionalism in the workplace. Oprah's History
 Oprah Winfrey is a woman who is admired by all media. Oprah was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi on January 29, 1954 to parents Venita Lee and Vernon Winfrey. At an early age, she went to live with her father after being sexually abused by several other male relatives in the care of her mother. When Oprah attended high school in Tennessee; she began broadcasting career as a newswoman for a Nashville radio station. Oprah attended Tennessee State University earning her a BA in Speech and Performing Arts. Oprah’s passion for broadcasting continued as a news anchor women and reporter for a Nashville television station as the first Black African American woman. Her biggest career move came when she was moved from the news anchor women to the new talk show host of the “early morning talk show”. Ranking the highest most successful television talk show viewed by 20 million people. As of today, Oprah Winfrey is an actress, producer, and philanthropist.

Oprah Winfrey love and passion for understanding people lives has touched some many people. Oprah Winfrey is the only Black African American Women to become a Billionaire and achieve so much in her lifetime. Women all over the world wants to know how to live better and they watch her show and she promises them how to strive to be a better person.

OprahWinfrey's strategic planning started in Chicago when she was the host of the “The Oprah Winfrey Show” started in the late 1980’s. She quickly rises to be the number one talk show host. Oprah Winfrey was then in a position to negotiate ownership of the show and started her own production company because of the success and the amount of revenue generated by the show.
 
OprahWinfrey's planning and marketing begins with the show discussing every topic that matters, with the most famous people and normal people. There was a place on her show for everyone. Her marketing plan was achieved when she was the highest ranking talk host show within a two year history.  
 
OprahWinfrey's marketing objective was to start her own cable channel “The Oprah Winfrey Network” that would give her the opportunity to speak for 24 hours a day. Her move from broadcast to cable has been a transformative moment for the television business. Making her the first time a talk-show host has ever taking over an entire cable channel.
 
OprahWinfrey's strategic directions with the cable channel were to host different talk shows; starting with the "Rosie O’Donnell" and "Rachael Ray".
