Segmenting and Targeting Markets

Segmenting and Targeting Markets
Oprah Winfrey has many new and exciting segments for “OWN” cable network for 2012 and 2013.  Within the last year sales and rating for “OWN” cable station and “O” magazine has been declining.  Oprah decisions to add more segments, hoping it will bring back some of her old and new viewers from “The Oprah Winfrey Show”.  Oprah Winfrey has been trying to build strong momentum for the network, so that she can connect with her audience.  Oprah knowing how to build a Company, she has to remember what the audience wants.  Oprah has to look at this new cable network like she did when she was producing outstanding shows with “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in Chicago.  She is now taking the new approach towards interviewing with major stars.  Oprah and her camera’s go into stars homes and interview them.  With these changes the rating has double digit from last year. Her biggest segment so far is “Oprah’s Favorite Things for 2012” which was aired yearly on “The Oprah Winfrey Show. These are the things that her views want to see, more of Oprah Winfrey and less of programs. Oprah and Discovery Communications may bounce back and get ahead if Oprah keep producing and give her audience her all.

One of the reasons why Oprah’s Next Chapter, has been a successful is because of her younger viewers.  The younger viewers wouldn’t mind seeing Oprah Winfrey doing iterviews from the luxury pop culture icons homes. Take for example, she interviewed Rihanna in Barbados that show  double digit numbers of viewers.

Business Marketing

Business Marketing
Oprah Winfrey marketing businesses consist of: Cable Network “OWN”, Oprah’s magazine, Oprah.com and Oprah’s Radio Channel.  Her latest venture is the section in The Huffington Post named “OWN”. Oprah decisions to market, her companies is business aspect rather than a personal use.  Oprah has made countless decisions that were effect with the decision of business to business.  A prime example, Oprah’s love for the Amazon’s Kindle with sales from e-book readers surged and inventories ran low.

The Oprah Magazine is now available on your iPad with a free download app. Monthly issues will give you exclusive videos’ of Oprah, and previews from her Reading Room section. The App will also have special promotions for her show.

Oprah has built her business marketing empire by recycling her TV shows contents into other media formats. Her media connection is with Oprah.com, Oprah Radio, and “O” Magazine all extensions of her TV show and feature similar content and key contributors to The Oprah Television show.

Oprah Winfrey has reached many views with this new on-line media.  She now discussed several topics as it related to the network, radio, and magazine. With this new section in "The Huffingt Post" Oprah will be reaching on millions of readers with motivation, inspiration and fulfillment for television.

Oprah Winfrey strategic alliance is when, her and Discovery Communications join together to form the Cable Television Network, “OWN” The Oprah Winfrey Network. The Network is a joint venture, which are equally shared.  Oprah Winfrey commitment to the “OWN” is something that she doesn’t take light. She is commitment to make it work for her and the company.  She has said I have no doubt that we will all be in lockstep in a very short time,” We are in this boat together in a very real way now. And I will put my brand and my future on the line because I know this one team — OWN/Harpo — is the boat I want to be in.”

Developing and Managing Products
Oprah Winfrey will be introducing some new shows for the “OWN” network.  The “OWN’ network had a profit loss since 2008.  Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications had a profit loss for $600,000 million, of which $330.000 was Oprah Winfrey. The problems with the Network were the rating. Oprah decision lack of appearance on the Network and cancellation of poorly preforming shows put the OWN Network in danger.

Oprah’s decision to acquire high rating, she started a series called “Oprah's Next Chapter”. In the decision of Oprah Next Chapter, she interviewed high profile people. In Season One (2012), Oprah will interviewed Aerosmith (Singer),Paula Deen’s (Southern Chef), Lady GaGa (Singer), Paris Jackson(Michael Jackson's daughter),Usher Raymond( Singer), Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson,(Rapper), Rihanna (Singer), and Bobbi Houston( Whitney Houston’s daughter). Season Two 2013 – Oprah even more of a list of high profile people to interview.
Oprah has to figure out a way to keep the rating and not lose them. Oprah feels that to keep the rating high; she will have to target women ranging from 25 and older. She has noticed with that strategy the numbers have been tripled-digit in rating.
Her new product to the line of promotion is an exclusive partnership with Tyler Perry. He is an awarding winning Actor, Director, Screenwriter, Playwright, and Producer. His introduction to the OWN Network will be two scripted series which will premiere in Mid-2013. All Oprah’s production has been live viewed, now the hope of Tyler Perry his will be scripted. Oprah has stated “I have been looking forward to the day when we would be in the position to enter the world of scripted television. That day has come".
As of November “OWN” Oprah Winfrey Network ratings has gains for the ninth consecutive month of growth across the board.  Discovery has noted that they expect the joint venture to turn profit before 2012 and for 2013. “Nielson data showed that about 770,000 people tuned in for the first hour of OWN on New Year’s Day, and almost 1.2 million watched two prime-time episodes of “Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes,” a reality show about the last season of her talk show.  I guess all the viewers wanted to see “Oprah Winfrey” and, now she doing what has made her famous being a talk show host for “OWN”.
 Oprah's Integrated Marketing/Communications

Oprah Winfrey next chapter is working with awarding-winning Actor and Director Tyler Perry.  Tyler Perry coming to the network will bring all his television series and projects, the first of which will be two new scripted shows to premiere next year.  Oprah feels that Tyler Perry can bring a wealth of knowledge as a filmmaker and entrepreneur best known for his madcap comic character “Madea”.  He has entered an exclusive partnership with OWN to make the network his "singular destination.
The partnership with Tyler Perry will be a will mark for the first scripted programming every done on Oprah Winfrey “OWN” cable station. Oprah has stated “I have been looking forward to the day when we would be in the position to enter the world of scripted television and the day has come,” CEO of OWN. “We are all energized by the opportunity to collaborate with Tyler who has a proven track record for producing highly successful cable series. He has an incredible ability to illuminate life stories and characters in his unique voice and inspires and encourages people all over the world.”

Oprah Winfrey Wins 'Own Your Power' Trademark Lawsuit

Oprah was sued for the famous words "Own Your Power" that she used in her magazine and TV show. The Oprah Magazine “O” featured Oprah Winfrey and the headline “Own Your Power”.  The issue was a Power List, and ran in conjunction with corporate-sponsored events and an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show that promoted the issue. She was sued for trademark infringement by Simone Kelly-Brown. The women who ran a company specializing in motivational services had registered “Own Your Power” as a trademark in 1996.  The New York Federal judge dismissed the claims. Her lawsuit stated that Oprah had violated her trademark rights and confused the origin of the trademark. The judge looking at cover stated that “The magazine trademark “O” at identification that the phrase was a headline, describing the contents of the magazine.

The judge rejects this analysis because of Winfrey's well-known trademark and reputation, the clear display of the magazine copy, and the innocent use of the phraseon the cover line describing what's inside the magazine. The judge notes that such sayings as "Tap Into Your Strength" and "Let Your Best Self Shine" denote the type of encouragement that readers would be getting by picking up a copy. He also stated that Winfrey didn't use the mark in bad faith, that there wasn't any trademark use so there didn't need to be any analysis over likelihood of confusion, and that Winfrey doesn't have liability for others infringing the trademark.

Oprah Winfrey/Panera Bread Retail Stores

Oprah Winfrey opened her first and only retail store on February 8th 2008, located 37th North Carpenter Street in Chicago. The store represented Oprah in her taste and style as well as that of The Oprah Winfrey Show, and Oprah Winfrey Magazine. The location of the store was a perfect place for her audience to go to after the taping of the Oprah Winfrey Show and fans visiting the city.
The Oprah Store carried nearly 1,000 different products in the 5,500 square feet of retail space.
· Souvenirs from The Oprah Winfrey Show
· Lounge, workout, luxury apparel
· O Baby - a line dedicated to infant product
 · South African arts and crafts
· Books and magazines
· Oprah's Closet is a section of The Oprah Store that is dedicated to items for sale that were once worn and loved by Oprah herself. All proceeds from the merchandise went to support Oprah's Angel Network. The store closed on May 25, 2011, the last day of the taping of “The Oprah Winfrey Showing”. Since I could not interview Oprah Winfrey about her retail store or fly to Chicago to get more information about the store.

I decided to visit a Panera Bread Store located at 3801 35th Avenue, Long Island City. The Assist Manager of the store happens to be my nephew, Anthony Clarke. I did a little bit of research about the store before interviewing him at the store. He has been an Assist Manager for about a year. Mr. Clarke stated that “Panera Bread ”headquarters is located at 3630 S. Geyer Road, Suite 100, St. Louis, MO 63127. He also stated that the mission of Panera Bread is “A loaf of bread in every arm”. They’re bread leadership is with the single goal of making great bread broadly available to consumers across America, Panera Bread freshly bakes more bread each day than any bakery-cafe concept in the country. Every day, at every location, trained bakers craft and bake each loaf from scratch, using the best ingredients to ensure the highest quality breads. Panera Bread bakery-cafes showcase the art and craft of bread making, helping customers truly appreciate and enjoy a great loaf of bread by studying its crust, crumb and craft. Panera Bread understands that great bread makes great meals, from made-to-order sandwich to tossed-to-order salads and soup served in bread bowls.

The history of Panera Bread legacy started in 1981 as Au Bon Pain Co., Inc. Founded by Louis Kane and Ron Shaich, the company prospered along the east coast of the United States and internationally throughout the 1980s and 1990s and became the dominant operator within the bakery-cafe category. In 1993, Au Bon Pain Co., Inc. purchased Saint Louis Bread Company, a chain of 20 bakery-cafes located in the St. Louis area.
In 2007, Panera Bread purchased a majority stake in Paradise Bakery & CafĂ©, a Phoenix-based concept with over 70 locations in 10 states (predominantly in the west and southwest). The Company purchased the balance of Paradise in June 2009. As of June 26, 2012, there are 1,591 bakery-cafes in 41 states and in Ontario Canada. operating under the Panera Bread®, Saint Louis Bread Co. and Paradise Bakery.

Mr. Clarke has stated “that the only way the company had made it during the recession was Panera’s strategy has been “to stay consistent and not to react to the recession”. Keeping cost constant and offering new salads and sandwiches”. They contribute the success to avoiding the discounting wars and maintain its margins by attracting customers with a higher quality product perceived to be a good value for the money.
Panera Bread Opened its 1st Store in Manhattan

When Panera Bread 1,500th store opened on February 07, 2012 it will be the company’s first location in Manhattan.
Anthony Clarke has stated that he enjoys his job. He takes pride in the Panera Bread
Company. He feels that he will someday be a Regional Manager for the Company.
